Getterman Fellows
Getterman Fellows is run through the Honors College Dean’s office, ensuring that students will have direct access to Honors College leadership and to administrative staff and distinguished scholars across the university. Through meetings with faculty mentors, specialized workshops, and academic enrichment resources, Getterman Fellows prepares scholars for success at Baylor and beyond. Getterman Fellows also allows students to form bonds of friendship with faculty and one another that persist throughout their lives.
Research, Service, and Leadership
Students wishing to succeed at the highest levels after graduation must have strong academic records and extensive experience in research, service, and leadership. Getterman Fellows helps students learn about and engage in the types of research and service that are expected of the best students.
In keeping with the Honors College's commitment to the integration of faith and learning, scholarship and service, students are invited to discern their calling, which involves more than the acquisition of mere skills. It involves reading texts in the tradition of Christian wisdom; reflecting on, and praying about, the way the light of faith informs our lives; and practicing the virtues to respond generously to the needs of others.
Fellows learn how to find research opportunities in their chosen areas, work effectively with faculty, improve their writing and reasoning skills, and better understand the important role that research plays in university life.
For service and leadership, students learn about opportunities to serve and develop public speaking and other leadership skills. They are also given opportunities to think deeply about leadership and to put into question flawed models of leadership prevalent in our society. In short, through Getterman Fellows, students will become some of the best-trained and most knowledgeable students on campus. Internships, mission trips, and international travel and study will also be a focus.
Funding
Getterman Fellows receive a stackable $5,000 scholarship through the Honors College, plus additional funding for an Honors Residential College spring break mission trip and funding for a research opportunity, either attending a conference as a participant or working with a professor as a research assistant on a project integral to the academic plans of the student.
Note that this $5,000 scholarship is already included within the scholarship given to those who receive the full Getterman Scholars award.
Student expectations
Students are expected to participate regularly in Getterman Fellows events. They are also expected to participate in the recruitment of high school students to Baylor and Getterman Fellows and in the mentoring of first year members. These are themselves leadership activities of Getterman Fellows.
