Current Getterman Scholars

Eight semesters, one Baylor study abroad, one mission trip, and one field opportunity (research, internship, etc.) are covered. At Baylor, tuition, fees, books, and food and housing are funded by Financial Aid. Fees covered include everything except for “optional” fees (e.g., parking).  

Support for study abroad, research, and mission/service experiences is funded by the Honors College. The scholarship will cover the program fee (housing, group trip, international health insurance, and airfare), study abroad fee, and administrative fee. The Honors College will also cover the cost of the deposit for the trip. 

Getterman funds do not cover summer opportunities before the first year. 

While some BU students pursue more than one program abroad, sometimes doing them back-to-back in a single summer, Getterman support is limited to one program.

In order for food and housing to be covered by the scholarship, yes. The food and housing portion is dependent upon living in the HRC, so if a Getterman Scholar decides to leave the HRC, they lose that portion of the scholarship.

The $5,000 awarded to Getterman Fellows is already included in the Getterman Scholar award. Getterman Scholars will receive this funding, though it will not be an additional amount on top of their Getterman Scholars award. 

Regarding Study abroad, research, and/or mission work, alternate scheduling is possible. For example, you might do a Wintermester study abroad program instead of a summer program, or a spring break mission experience instead of one in the summer. Additionally, in the past, students’ plans have not typically filled the whole summer, so there would be room for additional opportunities. 

We would highly recommend you take a look at the study abroad scholarship opportunities. Among these are the Goodrich Scholarship and the Boren Scholarship awards. 

Study Abroad Scholarships

The study abroad and mission trip opportunities must be BU faculty-led programs in order for them to be covered by Getterman funds. They cannot be exchange/affiliate programs. 

Because the cost of a semester abroad in a BU faculty-led program is generally similar to costs on our Waco campus, we treat a semester abroad as one of your eight semesters. For this reason, Getterman students typically complete a summer study abroad program in order to make the most of their award, even if they also spend a semester abroad.
