About the Program

Named in honor of the late Ted Getterman (BBA ’49, JD ’51) and his wife Sue Getterman (BA, ’50), the Getterman Scholars Program has awarded numerous full-cost-of-attendance scholarships since the program's inception in 2017 and has grown into one of the most prominent scholarship opportunities at Baylor. Each year the program receives hundreds of applications from high-achieving students from around the country across all academic disciplines. It especially attracts students interested in an integrated undergraduate liberal arts education that encourages connections between the various disciplines of study, the local and the global, the past and the present, and the love of learning and service of God and neighbor.

Selection for the Getterman Scholars Program carries with it a scholarship covering tuition, fees, room and board, along with support for study abroad, research and mission/service experiences.

About Ted and Sue Getterman

Gettermans

The Ted and Sue Getterman Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 2010 by Louis T. Getterman Jr. and Sue H. Getterman of Waco, Texas.

Ted Getterman, who passed away on July 1, 2014, graduated from Baylor University in 1949 with a BBA degree. He completed his JD degree in 1951 and thereafter planted roots in Waco as a "faithful steward, beloved Baylor ambassador and former Waco mayor" who "forever changed Baylor's landscape through his committed service and generous support." His college sweetheart and loving wife of 66 years, Sue Getterman, graduated from Baylor University in 1950 with a BA degree and remains devoted to a life of Christian conviction, civic engagement, leadership, and service.

Mr. and Mrs. Getterman received the 2000 Waco Philanthropists of the Year award from the Central Texas Chapter of the National Society of Fund Raising Executives and the 1999 Distinguished Service Award from Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center. They were instrumental in creating the Ted and Sue Getterman Wellness Center in connection with Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center. They also have received Baylor's Huckins and Neff Medallions, the Athletic Director's Hall of Honor Achievement Award, and the Baylor Founders Award. They have established Baylor scholarships in business, music, education, religion, and athletics. Additionally, they provided the largest donation to women's athletics, which resulted in Getterman Softball Stadium, and are the major benefactors towards the completion of Armstrong Browning Library's Garden of Contentment. They are members of the Heritage Club and the Baylor-Waco Foundation, where she served as the first chair of the women's division. She also served as a member of the Baylor Board of Regents from 2001-2010 and was a member of Baylor's Campaign for Greatness National Steering Committee. She currently serves on the Baylor Advisory Board for the President's Scholarship Initiative and is a member of Pi Beta Phi.

The Gettermans are members of the Endowed Scholarship Society, Old Main Society, Baylor Bear Foundation, Heritage Club, and Baylor/Waco Foundation. They have two sons -- Louis, III (Texas A&M BBA '75) and Holt (BBA '77). They have four grandsons, one granddaughter, and three great-grandchildren.
