FAQs
Eight semesters, one Baylor study abroad, one mission trip, and one research internship are covered. At Baylor, tuition, fees, a book stipend, on campus dining, and housing in the HRC are funded by Financial Aid. The scholarship covered only course enrollment related fees (e.g., parking permits are not included).
Support for study abroad, research, and mission/service experiences is funded by the Honors College. Students may select from study abroad or mission trip options that are led or supported by the Honors College. The scholarship will cover the program fee (housing, group trip, international health insurance, and airfare), study abroad fee, and administrative fee. The Honors College will also cover the cost of the deposit for the trip.
While some BU students pursue more than one program abroad, sometimes doing them back-to-back in a single summer, Getterman support is limited to one program.
Getterman funds do not cover summer opportunities before the first year. Additionally, the scholarship only applies to undergraduate work. Graduate work is not covered by the scholarship.
In order for food and housing to be covered by the scholarship, yes. The food and housing portion is dependent upon living in the HRC, so if a Getterman Scholar decides to leave the HRC, they lose that portion of the scholarship. Additionally, the scholarship only covers on campus dining options. Students with food sensitivities will work with OALA to receive meal plan accommodations.
The $5,000 awarded to Getterman Fellows is already included in the Getterman Scholar award. Getterman Scholars will receive this funding, though it will not be an additional amount on top of their Getterman Scholars award.
Regarding study abroad, research, and/or mission work, alternate scheduling is possible. For example, you might do a Wintermester study abroad program instead of a summer program, or a spring break mission experience instead of one in the summer. Additionally, in the past, students’ plans have not typically filled the whole summer, so there would be room for additional opportunities.
We would highly recommend you take a look at the study abroad scholarship opportunities. Among these are the Goodrich Scholarship and the Boren Scholarship awards.
The study abroad and mission trip opportunities must be Honors College faculty-led or sponsored programs in order for them to be covered by Getterman funds. They cannot be exchange/affiliate programs.
As a Getterman Scholar, you are supported in one study abroad experience, ideally a summer study abroad experience. If you choose to study abroad during a fall or spring semester, that term will count as one of your eight semesters of Getterman Scholar support. During that semester, we will continue to cover your tuition, room, and fees—just as we do when you're on campus—and we’ll also cover the cost of airfare to your destination and any other Baylor study abroad fees.
Alternatively, you may opt for a January or summer study abroad program. In that case, our support for your travel and program costs will be provided in addition to your eight semesters of regular support.
Yes! Each Getterman Scholar is eligible to receive up to $2,500 in support for a research internship, including external internships.
However, external internship funding is subject to financial aid constraints. Baylor University cannot award funding that exceeds a student’s Cost of Attendance (COA). This means that if a student has already received aid or scholarships that meet their COA, additional funding for an external internship may not be possible.
Because this varies by student and by academic year, each case requires individual review. The student will work with One Stop and the Honors College to determine their unique fundability for external internships during the academic year in which they intend to intern. Students must submit a formal proposal for their intended research internship. The proposal will be reviewed by the dean to determine whether the opportunity meets the standards for an approved research experience.
