FAQs
Interested in applying to Micah Scholars? Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about the program to help students navigate the application process.
Micah Scholars is a multi-year, service-learning program for students preparing for vocations in healthcare. Rooted in the Biblical call to “do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8), the program invites students to explore the moral dimensions of healthcare through the lens of Christian discipleship.
Due to the program’s longitudinal cohort model, only first-year pre-health students are eligible to apply.
While the program is sponsored by the Honors College and many of the Micah Scholars will be associated with one of the Honors College's academic offerings, faculty are welcome to nominate outstanding freshmen who would bring unique energy or perspective to missional medicine. No, due to the program’s longitudinal cohort model, only first-year students are eligible to apply.
The Micah Scholars program seeks students who have dedicated themselves to their pre-healthcare studies and who also deeply embrace the concept of missional medicine.
The program requires a significant time investment and includes specific course requirements, underscoring the depth and rigor of the experience. Micah Scholars commit to the equivalent of 1-3 hours of additional coursework, community engagement, and TA responsibilities each semester in the program. To ensure full participation, applicants should reserve space for 1-3 hr of coursework and other program participation in the sophomore, junior, and senior years.
It depends. If your in-major coursework allows you to attend the mandatory Waco Family Medicine experiences and the minimum expectations of Micah Scholars, yes.
While the Micah Scholars program is grounded in Christian principles, we welcome applicants of all faith backgrounds, including those who are exploring or uncertain about their beliefs. The only requirement is an intentional interest in learning from the life of Jesus as recorded in the Gospels.
Experiential learning in partnership with Waco Family Medicine includes three major components. First, Micah Scholars will learn about the inner workings of healthcare systems serving vulnerable populations by working along side interprofessional teams. Second, MS will get involved with community partners and resources that support vulnerable patients. And finally, MS will grow as advocates and well-informed community members through accompanying and supporting patients with complex medical and social needs through our healthcare system.
While Micah Scholars are intended to serve each other in community as part of cohorts, and while Micah Scholars serve as mentors to students enrolled in pre-health chapel and who attend events we sponsor like Medicine as Mission, our greatest hope is that we are learning to serve as Jesus served. We hope to nurture students who have compassion for and the desire to serve even ‘the least of these’.
