Darren Middleton, Ph.D., Director of the Baylor Interdisciplinary Core, has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in recognition of his contributions to historical scholarship. The honor was conferred following the Society’s council meeting on November 21, 2025.

Election to the Fellowship is a distinguished milestone, awarded to scholars whose work has made a sustained impact on the study and teaching of history. Fellows are eligible to participate in the Society’s governance, serve in editorial leadership roles, and contribute to broader initiatives that advance historical understanding around the world.

“Darren Middleton’s election as a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society reflects international esteem for the quality and impact of his scholarship,” said Douglas Henry, Ph.D., dean of Baylor’s Honors College. “As an interdisciplinary scholar of considerable range, one whose study of literature and theology is accompanied by richly informed historiography, Darren’s membership in this distinguished fellowship will benefit the Royal Historical Society even as it honors his own work.”

This recognition affirms Middleton’s long-standing commitment to bringing historical perspectives into interdisciplinary inquiry, both in his research and in the classroom. His scholarship draws on varied primary and local historical sources to illuminate the intersections of literature, religion, theology, and lived experience.

“Being elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society is a lovely recognition of my contribution to historical scholarship,” Middleton said. “Archives, fieldwork, and oral histories represent the golden thread running through my academic story. The Society acts as a champion of history, both inside universities and within our broader culture, and I feel fortunate to play my part in its work at a moment when the discipline often feels beleaguered.”

Founded in 1868 and based in the United Kingdom, the Royal Historical Society promotes and supports historical scholarship worldwide through research initiatives, publications, and public engagement.
