The Award
Alagu was selected as a Churchill Scholar, one of only 16 recipients of the nation’s prestigious and highly selective award chosen for a year of graduate study at the University of Cambridge. The scholarship fully funded his Master of Philosophy in Medical Science at Churchill College, where he developed tissue engineering approaches for regenerative cell therapies against osteoarthritis at the Department of Surgery & Cambridge Stem Cell Institute.
Alagu was also named a Goldwater Scholar for his translational drug discovery across various disease areas. The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship is the preeminent undergraduate award in the United States given in the natural sciences, engineering and mathematics for students who show exceptional promise of becoming the nation’s next generation of research leaders. Alagu is also an Amgen Scholar, a world class research award.
At Baylor
Alagu graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.A. in University Scholars with concentrations in Biochemistry and Medical Humanities and minors in Biology and Business Administration.
While at Baylor, he was a part of several organizations and earned numerous honors, including the William and Argye Hillis Scholarship, Presidential Scholarship, and recipient of the Folmar and URSA grants. He led a project of his design uncovering a novel cancer therapeutic against breast cancer metastasis in the Taube Lab, served as the Biology Group Leader of the Baylor Drug-Lead Discovery Laboratory’s Pharmaceutical Collaboration, and was President of Baylor’s biotech incubator. Alagu founded the Baylor Laparoscopic Surgical Simulation program and was choreographer and lead dancer of Baylor Taal, the university’s competitive multicultural dance team. He also led the UNSC Cohort mentorship program and lectured in biology, medical humanities, and research courses at Baylor and the greater Waco school district. Alagu has several publications across disciplines and has presented his work at multiple professional conferences around the world.
